DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
oversees the work of Deputy Sheriffs I, or performs responsible duties in a
specialized area. Supervision is given to Deputy Sheriffs I, and is received
from superior officers through inspection and review of work performed. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Supervises
and evaluates on-the-job training of Deputy Sheriffs I;
Provides
first line supervision of Deputy Sheriffs I and gives direction on various
assignments and incidents while on patrol;
Maintains
control of scenes, both criminal and non-criminal, involving Sheriff’s Office
personnel;
Works
closely with federal, state, city and local police authorities in the exchange
of information and enforcement of law and order;
Conducts
inspections of personnel, vehicles and equipment;
May
conduct sales resulting from civil actions;
May
lecture at schools and community organizations.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of Criminal, Civil and Vehicle and Traffic
Laws; good knowledge of first aid methods; good knowledge of court procedures;
skill in the use and care of firearms and emergency equipment; ability to act
quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to enforce the law with firmness,
tact and impartiality; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of others
in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of this position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2)
years of permanent competitive status as a Deputy Sheriff I.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid New York State driver's license at
the time of appointment; appointees must maintain a valid license throughout
their employment in this title.
