DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class is responsible for the overall operation of a major bureau of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office. The incumbent performs both technical and administrative duties.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Directs and guides subordinates toward the accomplishment of bureau goals;

            Trains subordinates in the specialized techniques necessary for the efficient functioning of the bureau;

            Receives, collates and records the results of the bureau's activities;

            Prepares periodic reports to the Sheriff on the operations of the bureau;

            Prepares and submits budget requests for the bureau;

            Oversees the implementation of court orders and legal instruments directed to the Sheriff's Office for execution;

            May lecture at schools and community organizations.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of Criminal, Civil and Vehicle and Traffic Laws; thorough knowledge of the operation of all divisions of the Sheriff's Office; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to keep records and make written and oral reports; ability to plan, assign, and super­vise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            PROMOTIONAL

            One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Deputy Sheriff III.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid New York State driver's license at the time of appointment; appointees must maintain a valid license throughout their employment in this title.
