FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this
class is responsible for assisting in the administrative supervision of the
Police Division of the Sheriff’s Office.
The incumbent exercises independent initiative and judgment in assisting
with formulating policies and procedures beneficial to the efficient operation
of the division. Supervision is
exercised over a substantial number of sworn and civilian personnel directly
and through intermediate supervisors.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Deputy
Sheriff or higher. Does related work as
required.
Assists in overseeing the daily
operation of the bureaus and sections within the division;
Oversees
the Investigative Services Bureau, Emergency Management Section and the
Homeland Security Section.
Provides for supervision of
subordinates directly and through intermediate supervisors;
Reports the activities of various
bureaus to the Chief Deputy Sheriff;
Assists in formulating policies and
procedures;
Attends meetings with the District
Attorney, courts and law enforcement agencies.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge
of the operation and administration of all bureaus in the Sheriff's Office; good
knowledge of Criminal, Civil, Vehicle and Traffic Laws; good knowledge of the Deputy
Sheriff Directive Manual; good knowledge of current literature and sources of
information in the field of criminal justice; ability to plan, direct and
supervise the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; ability to deal effectively with others; ability to express
oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to act
quickly and calmly in emergencies; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.

competitive status as a Deputy Sheriff Captain.
