DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves patrolling and protecting the grounds of parks and related facilities.  Under supervision, an employee in this class is responsi­ble for guarding and protecting parks by standing watch at a fixed post or patrolling in a vehicle.  Principal responsibility is to guard against destruc­tion and to keep general public order.  Routine assignments and special orders are received from supervisors.  All work methods and results are reviewed through periodic reports, inspections and consultations.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Guards and patrols park area and facilities either on foot or by vehicle to maintain order and preserve public property;

            Directs traffic and enforces park and beach rules, regulations and other codes as may be applicable;

            Answers calls for assistance in connection with accident or emergency situations within the park;

            Assists in calming civil disorders, such as unruly groups;

            Assists in searches for missing persons, children, etc. in parks and beaches;

            Conducts extensive fire patrols in parks to prevent loss of natural resources through fire;

            Works closely with the Conservation Department on enforcement of conservation laws during fishing and hunting seasons in parks;

            Furnishes the public information regarding park rules, regulations and procedures;

            Keeps simple records and makes reports on findings and incidents that occur on his tour of duty;

            May administer first aid;

            May arrest persons for violations of court orders; may arrest suspects at crime scenes within the parks.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of park areas to which assigned; some knowledge of the principles and practices of jurisdictional parks and recreation areas; some knowledge of first-aid procedures; some knowledge of criminal, conservation and other laws as pertains to departmental or jurisdictional operations; skill in the use and care of firearms; ability to learn park procedures regarding large picnics, camping, tenting, fire control, beach patrol and emergency rescue; ability to direct traffic and control parking in parks and at beaches; ability to enforce law and park rules with firmness, tact, impartiality and to deal courteously with the public; ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to express oneself clearly, both orally and in writing; physical and mental condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

            1- Candidates must be 20 years of age at the time of appointment; and,   

            2- There will be qualifying medical, psychological and physical agility evaluations; and,

            3- Candidates must be a United States citizen at the time of appointment; and,

            4- At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State; and,

            5- After appointment, the incumbent will be required obtain a Peace Officer Training Certificate recognized by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council.
