DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under supervision, an
employee in this class is responsible for directing the protection of a small
park or assisting a supervisor in the direction of a large park. The incumbent is responsible for performing
the duties of park protection as well as administrative duties. Work is reviewed by either a Park Ranger III
or the Park Ranger IV by periodic reports, conferences and observation of work
performed for effectiveness of results.
Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises,
trains and instructs subordinate Park Rangers in the performance of their
duties;
Assists
in calming civil disorders, such as unruly groups at parks and beaches;
Supervises and assists in conducting
searches for missing persons at parks and recreational areas;
Conducts
extensive fire patrols in parks to prevent loss of natural resources through
fire;
Maintains
records and prepares reports on the operations and unusual incidents that occur
at the assigned park;
Prepares
evaluations for work performed by subordinate Park Rangers;
May
act as a Post Commander or as an Assistant Post Commander responsible for the
protection of public park or recreational area;
Depending
on assignment, may participate in and direct investigations of crimes which
occur in the park; may book persons arrested.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of park areas to which assigned; good knowledge of first-aid
procedures; good knowledge of criminal, conservation and other laws as pertains
to departmental or jurisdictional operations; good knowledge of the principles
and practices of jurisdictional parks and recreation areas; skill in the use
and care of firearms; ability to learn park procedures regarding large picnics,
camping, tenting, fire control, beach patrol and emergency rescue; ability to
direct traffic and control parking in parks and at beaches; ability to enforce
law and park rules with firmness, tact, impartiality and to deal courteously
with the public; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates
in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to act
quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to understand and carry out oral and
written instructions; ability to express oneself clearly, both orally and in
writing, physical and mental condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2)
years of supervisory experience as a peace or police officer.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
1- Candidates must be 20 years of
age at the time of appointment; and,
2- There will be qualifying medical,
psychological, and physical agility evaluations*; and,
3- Candidates must be a United
States citizen at the time of appointment; and,
4- At the time of appointment and
during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to
operate a motor vehicle in New York State; and,
5- After appointment, incumbents will be required to obtain a Peace Officer Training Certificate recognized by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council.
PROMOTIONAL
Two
(2) years of permanent competitive status as Park Ranger I.
*At the discretion of the Appointing Authority,
qualifying evaluations may be waived for candidates who previously passed the
required evaluations, and have been continuously employed since then in a peace
officer or police officer position within Suffolk County. “Continuously” is defined as having no break
greater than one (1) year.
