DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for supervising the protection of a large park or recreational area or several smaller parks or recreational areas. Supervision is exercised over Park Rangers through inspections and the assignment of duties in accordance with general instructions received from the Park Ranger IV. Both technical and administrative duties are performed by an employee in this class. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assigns duties to subordinate Park
Rangers and instructs them on new methods;
Supervises subordinates in calming civil
disorders, such as unruly groups at parks and beaches;
Supervises and assists in conducting
searches for missing persons at parks and recreational areas;
Supervises law enforcement activities
which occur within an assigned park;
Investigates and corrects complaints
regarding the law enforcement activities at assigned parks;
Maintains records and prepares reports on
the operations and incidents which occur at the park assigned;
Prepares evaluations for work performed
by subordinate Park Rangers;
May act as a Post Commander or as a Zone
Commander responsible for the protection of an assigned public park(s) or
recreational area(s);
Interfaces with the public regarding the
law enforcement policies and methods of the department;
Depending on assignment, may investigate
those crimes which occur in the park where unusual and/or difficult law
enforcement problems are likely to occur.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of
jurisdictional parks and recreation areas, and of the duties of Park Rangers;
thorough knowledge of first aid and rescue methods; thorough knowledge of the
operations of all assigned parks; good knowledge of criminal, conservation and
other laws as pertains to departmental or jurisdictional operations; skill in
the use and care of firearms; ability to enforce law and park rules with
firmness, tact, impartiality and to deal courteously with the public, ability
to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to
full performance and high morale; ability to act quickly and calmly in
emergencies; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
ability to express oneself clearly, both orally and in writing; physical and mental
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four
(4) years of supervisory experience as a peace or police officer.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
1-
Candidates must be 20 years of age at the time of appointment; and
2- There
will be qualifying medical, psychological, and physical agility evaluations*;
and,
3- Candidates
must be a United States citizen at the time of appointment; and,
4- At
the Time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must
possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State; and,
5- After
appointment, incumbents will be required to obtain a Peace Officer Training
Certificate recognized by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent competitive
status as a Park Ranger II.
*At the discretion
of the Appointing Authority, qualifying evaluations may be waived for
candidates who previously passed the required evaluations, and have been
continuously employed since then in a peace officer or police officer position
within Suffolk County. “Continuously” is
defined as having no break greater than one (1) year.
