DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction of an administrative supervisor, an employee in this class has overall command of the Park Rangers assigned to all parks within the jurisdiction. Responsibility is included for all work performed and for all actions of subordinates.  Work is performed under the policy direction of the supervisor and is subject to review by him through conferences and periodic reports.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Schedules and assigns subordinates to posts, and instructs Park Rangers in their duties and in any new methods or procedures;

            Reviews and collates the reports of subordinates, activities; prepares reports;

            Supervises and participates in investigations of complaints regarding the activities of the Park Rangers under this jurisdiction;

            Evaluates work done and work performance and gives assistance to subordinate Park Rangers;

            Supervises searches for missing persons in parks and beaches;

            Interfaces with the public regarding the policies and methods of the department;

            Supervises fire patrols throughout parks to prevent loss of natural resources through fire;

            Depending on assignment, may supervise and participate in investigations of crimes where unusual and/or difficult law enforcement problems are likely to occur;

            May be responsible for inspecting equipment to insure that it is kept in working order.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of jurisdictional parks and recreation areas, and of the duties of Park Rangers; thorough knowledge of first aid and rescue methods; thorough knowledge of criminal, conservation and other laws as pertains to departmental or jurisdictional operations; good knowledge of the operations of all assigned parks; good knowledge of fire prevention, patrol and fire fighting methods pertaining to wood fires; skill in the use and care of firearms; ability to enforce law and park rules with firmness, tact, impartiality and to deal courteously with the public; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to express oneself clearly, both orally and in writing; physical and mental condition commensurate with the demands of the position.      

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of supervisory experience as a peace or police officer.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

            1- Candidates must be 20 years of age at the time of appointment; and

            2- Candidates must be a United States citizen at the time of appointment; and,

            3- At the Time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State; and,

            4- After appointment, the incumbent will be required to obtain a Peace Officer Training Certificate recognized by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Park Ranger III.
