DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An
employee in this class performs elementary fingerprint and photographic work
while undergoing supervised in-service training. The employee participates in fingerprinting
and photographing inmates at Suffolk County Correctional Facilities. Work is performed under direct supervision of
higher-level technician learning techniques and procedures on the job. After satisfactory completion of one (1) year
of continuous service as a permanent Criminal Identification Technician
Trainee, the incumbent achieves permanent competitive status as a Criminal
Identification Technician without further examination. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in photographing and fingerprinting
prisoners;
Assists in photographing and fingerprinting
applicants for municipal employment;
Assists in fingerprinting civilian
applicants for state and federal licensing;
Assists in preparing and forwarding
necessary fingerprint cards to the required agencies;
Assists in performing preventive
maintenance on all equipment;
Assists in photographing and
archiving prints of crime and accident scenes for investigations and court
evidence;
Assists in maintaining files on
fingerprints and photographs, requisitioning supplies and maintaining
inventory.

PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the principles used in the taking of still and motion pictures; knowledge
of computer software programs to prepare and edit images; knowledge of modern
principles and methods used in fingerprint classification; skill in the
operation of various types of cameras and lenses, both still and motion
picture; skill in the technique of taking fingerprints; skill in the care and
preventive maintenance of photographic equipment; ability to prepare written
reports detailing duties performed and assignments completed; ability to
understand and follow oral and written instructions; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Completion of one (1) photography course from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State, or vocational school recognized by the New York State Department of Education; or
b)
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school
equivalency diploma, and one (1) year of paid experience in taking fingerprints
and/or photography.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At
the time of appointment, and during employment in this title employees may be
required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York
State.
