DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision of an administrator an employee in this class is responsible for the supervision of a small number of Criminal Identification Technicians engaged in the operating of photographic equipment and the taking of fingerprints.  The incumbent participates in the work and assumes responsibility for the more unusual and technical problems that might arise.  The employee exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative.  Work is reviewed by an administrative superior through periodic conferences and review of reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Photographs and develops prints of inmates;

            Supervises and participates in the fingerprinting and photographing of prisoners and applicants for employment;

            Prepares and forwards fingerprint cards to federal agencies for classification and identification;

            Maintains files of fingerprints and photographs;

            Answers mail and phone inquiries, and assists all other law enforcement agencies regarding criminal record checks;

            Tabulates information for the monthly and annual reports;

            Makes up budget request for the division.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, practices, equipment and materials of modern photography, including still, motion, color and black and white photography; thorough knowledge of the modern principles and methods used in fingerprint classification; ability to take and process still and motion pictures and fingerprints suitable for use as permanent records in court; ability to supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to prepare and present reports both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other law enforcement agencies; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            Open Competitive

            Either:

            (a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State in photography and two (2) years of paid experience in taking, developing, printing, and enlarging still and/or motion pictures, both in color and black and white; or

            (b) Completion of a certificate program in Photography from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State, or from a vocational school recognized by the State Department of Education, and three (3) years of paid experience in taking, developing, printing, and enlarging still and/or motion pictures, both in color and black and white; or

            (C) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of paid experience in taking, developing, printing, and enlarging still and/or motion pictures, both in color and black and white; or

            (d) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

 

            Promotional

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Criminal Identification Technician.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title employees may be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
