DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves the classification and comparison of recorded ten print sets and latents to determine positive identification. The employee works under the direct supervision of an administrative superior in the Suffolk County Police Department, learning techniques and procedures on the job. The employee receives permanent appointment as a Fingerprint Analyst upon satisfactory completion of one (1) year of continuous service as a permanent competitive Fingerprint Analyst Trainee. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Compares
new ten prints with those on file;
Purges
prints from the fingerprint computer file;
Registers
prints inputted by Fingerprint Analysts into the database;
Performs
some clerical duties in the Identification Section;
Assists
Fingerprint Analysts in operation of the fingerprint computer.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Some knowledge of the principles and techniques involved
in fingerprint classification, comparison and positive identification; some
knowledge of the fingerprint computer system; some knowledge of the fingerprint
data base and the information stored therein; ability to make detailed
observations and record them accurately; ability to understand and follow oral
and written directions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN-COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma and two (2) years of clerical experience involving record maintenance
and database access.
NOTE: Additional
education beyond high school from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for the above
experience on a year-for-year basis.
