DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves the classification and comparison of recorded ten print sets and latents for the purpose of determining positive fingerprint identification for the Suffolk County Police Department.  The employee utilizes a special fingerprint computer for such analysis and must be able to correctly interpret computer-generated printouts.  The duties of a Fingerprint Analyst differ from those performed by Evidence Specialists in that the employee always works with a complete set of fingerprints.  Work is performed under the direction of an administrative superior.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Processes fingerprint cards for new arrests to determine whether the prints have already been entered into the computer system's database;

         Analyzes, determines and assigns pattern classifications of each fingerprint on all arrest cards for computer searching and data base registration purposes;

         Examines fingerprint cards to ensure that fingerprints are recorded in the appropriate boxes;

         Checks the correctness of the computer generated core and axis placement of each fingerprint entered into the system;

         Analyzes fingerprints on the special computer screen to determine positive identifications to fingerprints already in the system's database;

         Defines certain specific data relating to fingerprints on the computer screen using a stylus;

         Interprets computer-generated printouts to see whether scores accorded specific ten print sets indicate positive identification;

         Performs clerical duties related to computer processing and the system database;

         Performs some clerical duties in the Identification Section.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles and techniques involved in fingerprint classification and positive identification; good knowledge of the fingerprint computer system; some knowledge of the fingerprint data base and the information stored therein; ability to skillfully operate a computer stylus to correctly define and clarify fingerprint images on the computer screen; ability to correctly interpret computerized printouts relating to fingerprint searches and positive identifications; ability to make detailed observations and record them accurately; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN-COMPETITIVE

         Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of experience in the classification and positive identification of fingerprints utilizing an automated fingerprint identification system.

         

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

All employees are required to possess FBI fingerprint certification at time of appointment to this position.
