DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is assigned to the Special
Investigations Unit of the Department of Social Services and is responsible for
fingerprinting applicants for services and childcare providers applying for
certification. Work is performed under
the general supervision of an Investigator II or other administrator(s) in the
Special Investigations Unit. Does
related work as required.
Fingerprints
childcare providers and applicants for services using an automated fingerprint
imaging system which stores print images in a computerized data base;
Checks
fingerprints against existing print records to determine if there are matches
which could indicate multiple applications for services under different names
or in other counties of New York State;
Refers
fingerprint matches to investigative staff after performing a cursory check to
see whether there is a legitimate reason for the match or if fraud might be
indicated;
Maintains
statistics on fingerprints and prepares reports as required;
Maintains
inventory and requisitions supplies.
FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of modern principles and methods used
in fingerprint identification; skill in the operation of automated finger
imaging equipment; skill in the technique of taking fingerprints; skill in the
care and preventive maintenance of finger imaging equipment; ability to prepare
written reports detailing duties performed and assignments completed; ability
to understand and follow oral and written instructions; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and two (2) years of paid experience using automated finger imaging
equipment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
At
the time of appointment, and during employment in this title employees are
required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York
State.
After
appointment, the employee must complete an FBI certification course in
fingerprint identification. The employee will be scheduled by the employing
department for the first available course.
