DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class assists in the supervision of continuing
investigations and otherwise coordinates activities of the District Attorney's
investigative staff. Responsibility is
included for directing and conducting particularly sensitive investigations and
for conducting internal investigations as required. The work is performed under
the general direction of the Chief Detective Investigator or District Attorney
and is reviewed through conferences and submission of required reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Conducts, at the request of the Chief Detective Investigator or District Attorney, investigations pertaining to activities of individuals on the staff of the District Attorney's Office;
Performs requisite
background and security checks of all prospective employees of the District
Attorney's Office;
Assures appropriate
procedures are implemented to guarantee the security and integrity of evidence
pertaining to ongoing investigations;
Assists the Chief
Detective Investigator in directing and coordinating the work of the District
Attorney's staff;
Assists in the design and
content of training programs for investigative personnel;
Assists in reviewing
reports and recommendations submitted by investigative personnel for
administrative action;
Assists in the delegation
of assignments and maintains progress reports concerning current
investigations;
Regularly prepares job
performance evaluations of investigators in the District Attorney's Office;
Establishes and maintains
lines of communication between the District Attorney's Office and other law
enforcement agencies involved in an area of mutual investigation.

CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive
knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques employed in investigative
work; comprehensive knowledge of court procedures; comprehensive knowledge of
security operations and techniques; thorough knowledge of the laws, ordinances,
rules and regulations effective in the county, especially those related to
criminal investigations; some knowledge of techniques successfully employed by
other law enforcement agencies; ability to supervise the work of a large
investigative staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale;
ability to develop and implement innovative new investigative procedures;
ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
ability to coordinate and supervise investigations of a sensitive nature; good
judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma recognized by the New York State Department of Education and an
aggregate minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a detective or plainclothes investigator while employed as a
police officer by a state, county, city, town or village police department
within New York State. At least four years of this experience must
have been in a supervisory capacity with responsibility for the investigation
of syndicated, organized criminal activity in more than one of the
following: arson; homicide; larceny by
extortion; gambling; narcotics; prostitution; usury.
