DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the supervision of a Special Investigator, an employee in this class assists in conducting investigations on cases being prepared by the District Attorney's Office on those matters that require a specialized technical or occupational skill.  Responsibility is included for working on highly sensitive matters.   Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor in the Investigations division.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in conducting investigations of criminal matters that are of a sensitive nature;

            Interviews complainants and witnesses and prepares cases for presentation to a grand jury;

            Collects, evaluates, and develops evidence;

            Assists in maintaining equipment, records, ledgers, etc. necessary for specialized investigations;

            May use sophisticated electronic devices to gather evidence in the preparation of cases;

            May testify in court in regard to cases.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of investigative principles, practices, and methods; good knowledge of the penal law and rules of evidence and investigative practices and techniques; good knowledge and understanding of various criminal activities; good knowledge of court procedures and criminal trials; ability to assist in undercover investigations without destroying confidentiality; ability to conduct a sensitive investigation discreetly and professionally; ability to testify effectively in court; ability to use technical investigative equipment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in the exempt class; therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

            a) At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

     b) There will be qualifying medical and psychological evaluations.
