DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Employees in this class are responsible for serving as prosecutors for towns and villages within Suffolk County. Employees are designated by the executive officer of the jurisdiction and appointed by the governing board to prosecute cases involving the violation of local ordinances. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Makes appearances before courts in connection with arraignments, hearings and motions;

            Tries cases in town or village courts;

            Interviews witnesses and law enforcement officials in connection with the investigation and preparation of cases for trial in local courts;

            Performs legal research in connection with the preparation of documents necessary for prosecution;

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABIITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of state, County, and local criminal laws and procedures; good knowledge of the legal terminology and formats of documents including Memoranda of Law, Legal Briefs, Bills of Particulars, Applications and Petitions, Orders, and Motions; good knowledge of current developments and sources of information relative to prosecution; ability to prepare clear and concise legal opinions; ability to gather, assemble, and evaluate facts and evidence; ability to establish and maintain tactful relationships; ability to understand and carry out complex instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Positions are in the Exempt class and, therefore, have no minimum qualifications.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates must possess a license to practice law in New York State.
