FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class assists the County Attorney in serving as the attorney and counsel for the County and all its departments and acts for and in place of the County Attorney in the latter's absence. Under general supervision, the incumbent assigns legal matters to Assistant County Attorneys and supervises the progress of their work to completion, handles cases personally and performs administrative duties within the department. The employee is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in the performance of assigned duties. Work is reviewed by the County Attorney through reports and conferences for conformance to departmental policies. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assists in planning, organizing, directing and
supervising the activities of all subordinate officers and staff in the various
activities of the units in the office of the County Attorney;
Tries cases in New York State and
Federal Courts;
Prepares the proposed departmental
annual budget for the consideration of the County Attorney;
Reviews contracts, resolutions,
labor agreements and other documents to be entered into by Suffolk County and
its departments to assure their legality and assure that said documents offer
adequate protection;
Represents Suffolk County and its
departments in the prosecution or defense of lawsuits.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive knowledge of Federal, New York State and
municipal laws; comprehensive knowledge of the legal terminology and format of
such documents of law necessary to complete legal action; good knowledge of
current developments and sources of information relative to the work of the
County Attorney; ability to plan, supervise and assign the work of subordinate
personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to
reason analytically and apply legal training to legal matters; ability to
perform complex legal research with accuracy and perseverance; ability to
express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
This title is in the exempt class; therefore, there are
no minimum qualifications.
Possession of a New York State license to practice law before
the Bar of the State of New York, and, depending on assignment, eligibility to
be qualified to practice before district, state, and/or family courts.
At the time of
appointment and during employment the employee must possess a valid license to
operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
