DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class has direct supervision over claims and litigation arising under the County self-insurance program.  In addition, the incumbent is responsible  for reviewing all other litigation, including appeals, within the department with the exception of the Family Court Unit.  The employee is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in the performance of duties.  Work is reviewed by the Chief Deputy County Attorney through conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Reviews and renders advice relative to claims and litigation arising out of self-insurance;

          Tries cases in New York State and Federal Courts;

          Represents Suffolk County and its departments in civil litigation;

          Assists the County Attorney and Chief Deputy County Attorney in staff supervision, administrative duties and related work.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of Federal, New York State and municipal laws; thorough knowledge of the legal terminology and format of such documents of law necessary to complete legal action; knowledge of the current developments and sources of information relative to the work of the County Attorney; ability to plan, supervise and assign the work of subordinate personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to reason analytically and apply legal training to legal matters; ability to perform complex legal research with accuracy and perseverance; ability to exercise independent judgment and initia­tive; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This title is in the exempt class; therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a New York State license to practice law before the Bar of the State of New York, and, depending on assignment eligibility to be qualified to practice before district, state, and/or family courts.

 

At the time of appointment and during employment the employee must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
