FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class assists the District Attorney in the preparation of cases for court. The work involves responsibility for assisting the District Attorney in the investigation and prosecution of crimes and offenses as assigned by the District Attorney in that the employee in this class, although eligible for admission to the New York State Bar examination, would not have passed such examination nor been admitted to the Bar. Eligibility to hold this position terminates when the employee is admitted to the bar or has served as a Junior Assistant District Attorney for eighteen months. The work is performed under the general supervision of high level Assistant District Attorneys who review work in progress or upon completion for the achievement of desired results. Does related work as required.

ACTIVITIES
Performs legal research in connection
with the preparation of Memoranda of Law, Legal Briefs for trial or appeal of
cases or legal opinions for the guidance of those presenting cases in court;
Assists in the preparation of
Memoranda of Law, Legal Briefs, Bills of Particulars, Applications and
Petitions, Orders and Motions;
Interviews witnesses, both police and
civilian, as necessary, in connection with the investigation of crime and the
preparation of cases;
Consults with investigators in need of
legal advice in connection with any investigation;
Assists in the conduct of homicide
investigations.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the principles and practices of criminal laws and procedures;
good knowledge of modern investigatory techniques and methods of crime
detection; good knowledge of the legal terminology and format of such documents
and Memoranda of Law, Legal Briefs, Bills of Particular, Applications and
Petitions, Orders, and Motions; knowledge of current developments, recent
literature and sources of information relative to the field of criminal investigation
and prosecution; ability to prepare clear and concise legal opinions based on a
knowledge of criminal law and legal research; ability to gather, assemble,
analyze and evaluate facts and evidence in criminal cases; ability to establish
and maintain tactful and harmonious relationships with claimants, witnesses and
the general public; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and
written instructions; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS
This position
is in the exempt class; therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Graduation
from an accredited law school and eligibility for entrance to New York State
Bar examination.
