DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class assists the District Attorney in the investigation and prosecution of crimes and offenses occurring within Suffolk County. The incumbent performs duties pertaining to the office as directed by the District Attorney in accordance with the provisions of County Law, Section 702, Subdivision 2. This position differs from others in the Assistant District Attorney series in level of responsibility. Direction is received from high-level professional personnel who review work through reports and conferences. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Makes court appearances in connection with
arraignments or hearings and motions;
Tries criminal matters
in the County Court and Special Sessions and Supreme Courts;
Interviews witnesses,
both police and civilian, in connection with the investigation of crimes, the
preparation of cases for presentation to the Grand Jury, or the trial of cases
before the courts;
Performs legal research
in connection with the preparation of Memoranda of Law, law briefs for trial or
appeal of cases, or legal opinions for the guidance of the various members of
the District Attorney's Office;
Consults with
investigators in need of legal advice in connection with any investigation;
Gathers and presents
evidence to the Grand Jury in cases involving indictable crimes.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and
practices of criminal laws and procedures; thorough knowledge of modern
investigatory techniques and methods of crime detection; thorough knowledge of
the legal terminology and format of such documents as Memoranda of Law, Legal
Briefs, Bills of Particular, Applications and Petitions, Orders, and Motions;
good knowledge of current developments and sources of information in the fields
of criminal investigation and prosecution; ability to prepare clear and concise
legal opinions based on legal research and a knowledge of criminal law; ability
to gather, assemble, analyze and evaluate facts and evidence in criminal cases;
ability to establish and maintain tactful and harmonious relationships with
claimants, witnesses and the general public; ability to understand and carry
out complex oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with
the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position is in the exempt class;
therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Candidates must possess a New York State
License to practice law before the Bar of the State of New York.
