DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class provides specialized assistance to attorneys in re­searching questions of law, investigating facts and preparing various legal documents. The employee will work independently on assigned projects, which will include such tasks as the drafting of complex motions, drafting of discovery notices, drafting of contracts and agreements, conducting independent legal research, drafting opinions, and may also correspond and/or meet with attorneys, law firm staff and the general public. Supervision may be exercised over Paralegals.  Work is performed under the supervision of a Principal Paralegal or Attorney and is reviewed through periodic conferences and reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Drafts contracts, memorandum of agreements, memorandum of understanding;

            Conducts independent legal research and prepare case brief drafts and/or opinions;

            Drafts complex motions and memorandum of law for attorney review;

            Reviews discovery for legality/compliance and draft discovery notices, performs service of discovery;

May meet/confer with attorneys or other non-County personnel on issues involving litigation, such as scheduling, setting briefing schedules, deposition dates, fielding questions;

May conduct preliminary interviews of complainants and witnesses;

May appear in court with an Attorney and assist with court appearances, trials, and/or hearings.

           

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of legal reference sources; thorough knowledge of legal documents, legal terminology and the general course of legal proceedings; ability to conduct legal research and analysis; ability to prepare reports and legal documents; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys and other staff members; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensu­rate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

 PROMOTIONAL
