DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for the maintenance and servicing of tort claims against a jurisdiction from the point of inception of the claim to the conclusion.  In the performance of the duties of the position, the incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment and initiative. Supervision is received from the Tort Claims Manager or other administrative supervisor who reviews the work in progress and upon completion through conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required.     

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Receives and examines tort claims;  

         Opens and maintains tort files;

         Assists in the preparation of summaries of the status of cases for the professional staff;

         Maintains court calendar controls for the professional staff;

         Prepares notices of examinations of claim, examinations before trial and other documents;

         Arranges for documents to be served to the proper parties.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the operation of a claims unit; good knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations and policies related to tort claims; good knowledge of record keeping and claim processing; good knowledge of basic office operations; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

        

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and one (1) year of experience in a law office processing and reviewing claims.
