DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the tort unit for the County Attorney's Office or an equivalent unit in a Town Attorney's office.  The incumbent coordinates the work among the attorneys in the tort unit, and may supervise and assign work to tort claims assistants and/or the clerical support staff.  Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor who reviews the work through conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Receives and examines tort claims and assigns them to the tort claims assistants;

          Defends liability claims against the jurisdiction;

          May defend jurisdiction employees such as Police Officers or Correction Officers against claims of civil rights violations;

          Maintains liaison with other departments concerning claims filed against the jurisdiction;

          Reviews reports and analyzes potential liability;

          Prepares summaries of the status of cases for the professional staff and for the annual report of the County Attorney or Town Attorney.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the operation of a claims unit; good knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations and policies related to tort claims; good knowledge of record keeping and claim processing; good knowledge of basic office operations; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to deal courteously and effectively with county officials; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree, and two (2) years of experience in a law office analyzing and evaluating claims; or,

         

          b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in a law office analyzing and evaluating claims; or,

         

          c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
