DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class conducts initial interviews with those who report white-collar crimes to the District Attorney's Office.  Responsibility is included for determining whether the complaint falls within the jurisdiction of the District Attorney's Office, or should be referred to another agency.  For complaints deemed within the purview of the District Attorney's Office, case files with appropriate documentation are opened for further action by Assistant District Attorneys or Detective Investigators.   Work is performed under the general direction of a supervisory Assistant District Attorney or Detective Investigator and requires independent judgment and skill in dealing with irate complainants.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Conducts telephone or in-person interviews with persons reporting white collar crimes, such as forgeries, elder abuse, money swindles, misappropriation of escrow money, sub-contractors' complaints against home improvement contractors for non-payment, and swindles involving real estate, deeds and wills;

         Prepares case files for action by Assistant District Attorneys or Detective Investigators, by gathering documentation to support a complainant's allegations, contacting other agencies for additional information and composing a summary of the complaint;

         Explains to complainants whose issues cannot be addressed the reasons for rejection and refers inquiries to other agencies which may be of assistance;

         Maintains statistics on the number and category of complaints received.

        

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the parameters within which the District Attorney's Office may seek redress for white collar crime issues; good knowledge of legal reference sources relating to white collar crime; ability to gather relevant information from complainants who may be in a high emotional state; ability to make decisions; skill in ascertaining facts by personal contact and review of documents; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

Either:

a)    Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university, with an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, and two (2) years of experience evaluating complaints of white collar type crimes to determine acceptance for investigation; or

b)    Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in a public law enforcement agency, at least two (2) years of which have included responsibility for evaluating complaints of white collar type crimes to determine acceptance for investigation; or

c)    An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
