DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the general supervision of the Village Attorney, an employee in this class researches legal business for and represents the Village in court.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Gives legal advice to Village Agencies and all regular special committees established by the Village Board;

            Prepares legal instruments and materials pertaining to litigation involving the village;

            Pursues condemnation actions and negotiates the purchase of private property on behalf of the Village;

            Conducts research on subjects pertinent to Village problems pending legislation and court action;

            May represent the Village before the Board of Appeals and the Planning Board; 

            Prepares proposed ordinances and amendments to the Village Charter, local laws and administrative rules and regulations.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the Constitutional and Municipal laws; working knowledge of the Village Charter and/or local laws of the Village; ability to prepare legal instruments on behalf of the Village Board or heads of departments; ability to present clear and concise arguments pertaining to matters of litigation affecting the Village or its departments; ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Village officials, employees and the general public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in the exempt jurisdictional class; therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a New York State license to practice before the Bar of the State of New York.
