DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class participates in the preparation, presentation, and trial of cases involving Vehicle and Traffic Law, traffic offenses, and parking violations.  Direction is received from high-level professional personnel who review work through reports and conferences.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Represents the Traffic & Parking Violations Agency in the prosecution, defense, and/or litigation of alleged violations of law;

            Prepares and/or examines witnesses;

            Conducts hearings under oath;

            Compiles information and case material in preparation for court proceedings;

            Prepares evidence, briefs, and memoranda of law;

            Prepares written recommendations for prosecutions;

            Prepares written and oral recommendations on settlements or plea bargain agreements.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of Federal, New York State and local laws affecting the operation of the department; good knowledge of legal terminology and format of documents used in court actions; ability to apply legal training to specific issues and cases affecting the County; ability to gather, organize and evaluate material relevant to legal actions; ability to prepare clear and concise legal opinions based on research and knowledge of the law; ability to establish and maintain tactful and professional relationships; ability to express oneself clearly both orally and in writing; good judg­ment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in the exempt class; therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a New York State license to practice law before the Bar of the State of New York.
