DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE
CLASS
An
employee in this class assists the County Attorney in the defense of the
departments and agencies of Suffolk County.
The incumbent is responsible for performing the duties pertaining to the
office as may be directed by the County Attorney. In the assignment of duties, the County Attorney may be guided by
the individual's ability, experience and background, as well as the
availability of personnel. Direction is
received from high-level professional personnel, who review work through
reports and conferences. Does related
work as required.
Makes
appearances before the courts in connection with hearings and motions;
Tries
cases in New York State and Federal Courts;
Performs
legal research in connection with the preparation of Memoranda of Law, law
briefs for trial or appeal of cases, or legal opinions for the guidance of the
various members of the County Attorney's Office;
Prepares
Examinations Before Trial (EBT) for the preparation of cases for trial before
the courts;
Consults
with investigators in need of legal advice in connection with any
investigation.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES,
SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of Federal, State and local laws affecting the operation of the
department; thorough knowledge of the legal terminology and format of documents
used in court actions; good knowledge of current developments and sources of
information relative to the work of the department; ability to gather, organize
and evaluate material relevant to legal actions; ability to supervise the work
of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to
express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This
position is in the exempt class; therefore, there are no minimum
qualifications.
Possession of a New York State license to practice law before the Bar
of the State of New York, and, depending on assignment, eligibility to be
qualified to practice before district, state and/or family courts.
At the time of appointment and
during employment the employee must possess a valid license to operate a motor
vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the
transportation requirements of the position.
