DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
general direction, an employee in this class assists the Town Attorney by
handling complex litigation matters affecting the Town and its departments. The incumbent appears as counsel for the
Town, as directed by the Town Attorney, on trial and appellate levels of the
Courts of the State of New York and the United States. Confers with the Town Attorney, the Deputy
Town Attorney and the Town Board. Work
is reviewed by the Town Attorney through conferences and reports. Does related work as required.
Acts
as counsel to the Town on trial and appellate levels of the Courts of the State
of New York and the United States;
Prepares legal
instruments and related material for court cases;
Consults with the Town
Attorney, Deputy Town Attorney, and the Town Board about litigation involving
the Town.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of Federal, New York State and municipal laws; Thorough knowledge of
the legal terminology and format of such documents of law necessary to complete
legal action; Good knowledge of the current developments and sources of
information relative to the work of the Town Attorney; Ability to reason
analytically and apply legal training to legal matters; Ability to perform
complex legal research with accuracy and perseverance; Ability to exercise
independent judgment and initiative; Ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; Physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This
position is in the exempt class; therefore there are no minimum qualifications.
Possession of a New York State license to practice law before the Bar of
the State of New York.
