DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class serves as Counsel
in all legal matters pertaining to the School District, as vested under Section
#2590E of the Education Law of New York State.
The incumbent, in the performance of the duties of the position,
exercises much independent judgment and initiative. Supervision is given by the chief school administrator and School
Board through conferences and reports.
Does related work as required.
Gives legal advice to
the Administration, Board of Education, District Clerk and District Treasurer;
Submits monthly
reports to the Administration and School Board regarding pending litigation,
and legal opinions;
Prepares legal
instruments and materials pursuant to litigation involving the School District;
Conducts research on
subjects pertinent to School District problems, pending legislation and court
action;
Attends School Board
meetings and additional special meetings as may be necessary;
Reviews all contracts
entered into by the School District;
Reviews and reports to
the School Board all County, State and Federal legislation affecting the
School District.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the Constitutional, Federal, State and local
School Laws; ability to prepare, review and/or analyze legal instruments on
behalf of the School Board, Administration, and School District; ability to
present clear and concise arguments pertaining to matters of litigation
affecting the School District and/or its departments; ability to exercise
independent judgment and initiative; ability to establish and maintain
effective relationships with School District officials, employees and the
general public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position is in the exempt class; therefore, there are no minimum
qualifications.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a New York State license to practice law before the Bar
of the State of New York.
