DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is involved in providing legal counsel to the Board of Fire Commissioners at their meetings and as the need arises.  The incumbent recommends appropriate action in situations requiring a legal opinion and represents the Fire District in legal actions.  Work is under the direction of the Board of Fire Commissioners.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Reviews all legal matters and questions that arise within a Suffolk County Fire Department;

            Prepares briefs for legal action and represents the Fire District as legal counsel;

            Assists the Fire District Board in interpreting laws and regulations, which affect the Fire District;

            Reviews contracts and other agreements for a Fire District prior to finalization.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the laws specifically affecting the operation of Fire Districts; thorough knowledge of the municipal laws governing the Fire District area; ability to analyze legal problems and render sound legal counsel to Fire District Board; ability to write clear, concise opinions based upon knowledge of the law and on legal research; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in the exempt class; therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates must possess a New York State License to practice law before the Bar of the State of New York.
