DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class presides over the justice court when requested by the village justice or in the absence or inability of the village justice to serve. This position only exists in villages that have only one (1) Village Justice. The incumbent is appointed by the mayor, subject to the approval of the board of trustees. Does related work as required.
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
            Presides over justice court performing arraignments, sentencings and weddings;
            Hears cases and makes rulings of law regarding civil claims, small claims, landlord/tenant claims, traffic and parking offenses, and criminal offenses committed within the village;
            Adjudicates village issued building and code enforcement appearance tickets;
            Responsible for monies taken and/or returned.
 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the Constitutional and Municipal laws; thorough knowledge of legal terminology and court proceedings; good knowledge of the provisions of the Village Charter and/or local laws of the Village; ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This title is in the Exempt jurisdictional class, and therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.
