DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs semi-skilled work in pothole and shoulder repair and is responsible for independent operation of a hot box unit used for minor repairs and the patching of potholes not affiliated with the asphalt crew, as well as driving the vehicle that tows the unit.  Work differs from that performed by asphalt workers in that this employee works separately and does not pave roads, but performs repairs and fills potholes.  The employee is responsible for operating a hot box, its heating system, and for the maintenance and upkeep of said equipment.  Work is subject to inspection in progress and is performed under the supervision of a Highway General Supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Drives dump truck towing portable hot box to any number of geographic locations as assigned;

            Inspects towing vehicle and hot box, and assures heating element is functioning properly;

            Drives to asphalt plant, picks up material, and manually shovels asphalt into pothole;

            May operate hand-operated roller for smoothing and leveling of pothole;

            Cleans out hot box, checks working condition of equipment, and performs routine service and maintenance, if needed;

            Completes daily operating log of jobs completed and inspects receipts for proper tonnage amounts recorded on paperwork;

            May pick up brush and leaves, plow snow, and/or perform other highway related functions, when needed.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the operation, maintenance, alterations, limitations and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assigned; good knowledge of tools and equipment used in asphalt patching; ability to make emergency repairs and to assist in making general repairs of equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year operating heavy equipment, which has included working with the application of asphalt.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates must possess the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.  License must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
