DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The employee performs specialized manual work in the care and cultivation of plants, shrubs, flowers, trees and lawns.  Work is performed with considerable technical independence while adhering to general directions, plans or design of administrative superior.  Employee establishes work priorities in accordance with climatic, soil, vegetation or seasonal conditions.  Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for condition of landscaped area and compliance with work orders. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Seeds, fertilizes and waters lawns, shrubs and flowers;

            Prunes and sprays trees and shrubs to maintain a healthy growth;

            Cultivates seedlings and nursery stock, grafts and propagates flowers, clips and shapes ornamental hedges and shrubs;

            Creates ornamental flowerbeds, weeding, fertilizing, and maintaining soil condition as required by species of vegetation;

            May use hand tools or motorized equipment to rake leaves, cut grass, remove snow, picking up debris and moving supplies and equipment;

            May fabricate or install ornamental or protective fencing and supports.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the techniques, materials and tools used to cultivate, maintain and care for shrubs, flowers, lawns and trees; good knowledge of the growth characteristics and typical diseases of plants and flowers common to the region; skill in the use of gardening equipment and tools; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            Two years of experience in the care and cultivation of shrubs, flowering plants, trees and lawns; or,

            Specialized nursery or landscape education may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the above experience.
