DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, the employee performs light manual work in operating a passenger elevator in a public building.  The elevator operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of an automatic floor selector controlled elevator.  Work involves constant contact with the public and is subject to check for efficient and safe operation.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Operates an automatic passenger elevator;

          Prevents overloading of elevator; watches signal lights in order to pick up and discharge passengers; checks to see that elevator stops at floor level;

          Gives information to public regarding location and function of departments and officer; gives information regarding the names of specific administrative or supervisory personnel;

          Reports defects and mechanical operation of elevators; keeps interior of elevator clean.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Ability to learn the operation of a passenger elevator; ability to understand the meaning of elevator signals and follow oral instructions; ability to deal with the public in a courteous tactful manner and to direct persons to various departments, offices, and personnel; ability to stand continuously while working.

There are no minimum education or experience requirements for this position.
