DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under immediate supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the satisfactory performance of a variety of light and heavy manual laboring tasks in the collection and disposal of garbage. Some assignments, including elementary equipment operation, may require skills which can readily be learned on the job. Usually work is performed under the immediate supervision of an employee of a higher classification, but the basic tasks assigned may be routine and repetitive in nature and once learned, can be carried on without difficulty and under only general supervision. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Performs manual tasks in collecting and disposing of garbage;

Collects and disposes of leaves, litter and refuse;

May collect and dispose of seaweed on local beaches.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of simple tools used in garbage collection; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to operate simple machinery; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
