DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under immediate supervision, the employee directs boat traffic through a
County canal by the operation of mechanical locks and water level control
valves. The work involves performance
of a variety of routine duties in the maintenance of the lock and tide gate
facility and its grounds. Duties are
subject to shift variation. Work is
reviewed by frequent inspection and by review of the records which the employee
keeps. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Keeps station at Lock Tender's cottage; watches for approaching water traffic, and opens and closes proper lock; opens electrically operated water control valves to obtain proper water level, and directs boat through canal;
Keeps records of boats
passing through canal;
Makes minor repairs and
adjustments and lubricates machinery;
Keeps cottage clean;
Performs unskilled labor, such as chipping paint, rough painting,
cleaning the grounds and general housekeeping activities, to maintain the
locks, grounds and tide gate facility.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Some knowledge of construction and operation of power-driven canal
locks; some knowledge of the rules and regulations controlling the use of a
County canal; some knowledge of the construction and operation of power driven
locks; skill in the use of simple mechanical tools to maintain and adjust motors
and other canal lock machinery; ability to understand and follow oral and
written instruction; ability to keep simple records and to make reports;
ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
There are no minimum education or experience requirements for this
position.
