DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs skilled technical work in operating a workboat and its related equipment in support of a hydraulic dredge. The incumbent is responsible for operating, maintaining and repairing this equipment and is expected to exercise independent judgment concerning repairs and work procedures. Assignments are received from the Dredge Captain who inspects completed assignments. Does related work as required.

           

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Operates equipment that tows a dredge;

            Maintains dredge and support equipment on site as required;

            Assists in locating anchors, pontoons and cables;

            Recommends replacement of equipment to supervisor and performs necessary repairs and/or replacement;

            Operates gasoline or diesel engines; starts, stops and controls speed of equipment;

            Checks water temperature, oil pressure and levels; records readings hourly and makes adjustments; checks and pumps bilges.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the techniques and methods used in the operation of marine equipment; good knowledge of the operation of gasoline and diesel engines; good knowledge of dredge operations and equipment; skill in the control of a work boat; skill in the care and use of tools and equipment used in the repair of dredges and their related equipment; ability to keep records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

           

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of marine equipment.
