DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision, an
employee in this class is responsible for assisting in overseeing the general
operations of a municipal airport. The
employee is responsible for monitoring the safety of passengers and personnel
within the airport. Responsibilities
include overseeing airport security and the maintenance of safe ground
operations, addressing noise complaints, and assisting with administrative
duties. Supervision is exercised over
Airport Attendants and/or airport maintenance staff. Work is performed under the direct
supervision of an assigned administrative supervisor and is reviewed through
conferences and submission of required reports.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Coordinates,
assigns and supervises the work of Airport Attendants and/or airport
maintenance staff who are responsible for performing security patrols of the
airport and for the maintenance of public areas, offices, and bathrooms in
airport buildings;
Reviews
the operation of a two-way radio used for the take-off and landing of planes at
local municipal airports;
Maintains
a daily log of all airport operations and prepares reports concerning
activities of employees and operations as needed;
Periodically
patrols airport grounds checking for vandalism, equipment breakage and other
safety and security conditions;
Addresses
noise complaints and prepares reports regarding trends;
Assists
administrators with budget preparation and monitoring, purchasing, and billing;
May
prepare correspondence regarding the security and maintenance of the airport.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of airport operations
and FAA regulations as they pertain to general aviation airports; good
knowledge of buildings, grounds, and custodial operations and procedures; good
knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; ability to supervise the
activities of employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high
morale; ability to react quickly and calmly in times of emergency; ability to
express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

COMPETITIVE
(a) Graduation from a
college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State
with a Bachelor’s Degree in Aviation Administration or a related aviation
field; or,
(b)
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school
equivalency diploma and two (2)
years of experience in airport operations and/or aviation related activities
such as aircraft maintenance and operation.
