DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class guards and patrols park areas either on foot, or by vehicle to maintain order and preserve County property. Supervision is provided by a Park Ranger who makes periodic checks for performance of duties.  The incumbent may supervise Park Security Aide Is and other temporary personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists Park Rangers in guarding and patrolling park areas to maintain order and preserve County property; reports unusual circumstances to Park Rangers;

          Directs traffic and enforces park and beach regulations;

          Assists in searches for missing persons, animals, vehicles and property in County parks and beaches;

          Conducts fire patrols in County parks to prevent loss of natural resources through fire;

          Provides information to the general public on park rules, regulations and procedures;

          Keeps simple records and makes reports on findings and incidents that occur.

Good knowledge of park rules, regulations and procedures; ability to direct traffic; ability to enforce park regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality and to deal courteously with the public; ability to learn emergency first aid methods; ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to express oneself clearly both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

There are no minimum education or experience requirements for this position.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

          1) Depending upon assignment, possession of a valid New York State driver's license at time of appointment; if required, license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.

          2) Upon appointment, candidates must apply for registration as a guard with the New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services. Registration must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
