DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class is
responsible for supervising a security staff engaged in patrolling the buildings
and grounds in a school district. The
incumbent will prepare schedules and assign security staff to posts, conduct
daily inspections, and enforce school rules.
The employee will promote and maintain proper conduct and ensure the
safety of students, staff and visitors through supervision of subordinate
security staff at their posts. Employees
may be expected to provide classroom instruction directed at increasing
awareness, personal safety and an understanding of applicable laws. Work
requires the exercise of considerable independent judgment and initiative in
assisting and directing the security staff, and in the resolution of security
problems. Work is performed under the
general supervision of an administrative supervisor. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises
and patrols all areas of school buildings and grounds including halls,
stairwells, rest rooms, courtyards, entrances and parking lots to prevent
trespassing, loitering, and class cutting, and to protect persons and property,
maintain order, and assure compliance with all rules and regulations;
Assigns
security staff to posts or patrols throughout the district;
Assists
students with problems and refers them to proper staff members;
May
conduct classroom presentations to provide information and answer questions
regarding personal safety, crime and violence prevention techniques and
applicable laws including drug laws, traffic laws, etc.;
Questions
unauthorized persons on or around school premises, advises as to school rules,
and either directs visitors to the appropriate party, or asks them to leave;
Restrains
persons engaged in disorderly conduct;
Reports
any problems, incidents, and conditions affecting the security of school buildings
and grounds to the appropriate administrator, or to police if necessary;
Assists
police in calming disturbances if necessary;
Assists
when emergencies occur within the school building;
Watches
for illegal drug use and accompanies school administrators on locker searches
for drugs, weapons, or explosive devices.

Thorough knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations
applicable to a school district and necessary for promoting and maintaining
proper conduct, and ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors;
thorough knowledge of crisis intervention and conflict resolution techniques; thorough
knowledge of crime and violence prevention techniques; ability to provide
related educational information to students through classroom presentations; ability
to identify illegal drugs and detect signs of use; ability to defuse
potentially dangerous situations; ability to follow directions; ability to
develop a rapport with students; ability to explain rules and regulations in a
way that will be understood and obeyed; tact; good judgment; ability to
supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to
enforce rules and regulations with firmness and tact; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Seven
(7) years of experience as a Peace or Police Officer from a jurisdiction within
the State of New York and one (1) year of experience as a supervisor of security
staff or law enforcement personnel.
PROMOTIONAL
One
(1) year of permanent competitive status as a School Security Guard.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS TO CARRY OR POSSESS FIREARMS: Senior School Security Guards may carry or
possess firearms while on duty if authorized to do so by the Appointing
Authority and a license has been issued pursuant to §400 of Penal Law. Where
possession of the license is required, eligibility for and continued possession
of the license is required for employment.
*At the discretion of the
Appointing Authority, the qualifying psychological evaluation may be waived for
candidates who have a valid New York State MPTC certification, within the
following guidelines:
a.) Pursuant to §2.30 6) of Criminal
Procedure Law:
Separated for less than 2
years after having served for less than 2 consecutive years as a peace officer
in NYS, or; Separated for less than 4 years after having served as a peace
officer in NYS for more than 2 consecutive years
b.) Pursuant to §209-q 1) b) of General Municipal Law:
Separated for less than 2
years after having served for less than 2 consecutive years as a police officer
in NYS, or; Separated for less than 4 years after having served as a police
officer in NYS for more than 2 consecutive years, or; Up to 10 years after
separation with an approved police officer refresher course.
