DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for directing visitors and protecting
municipal property at a museum. An
employee in this class guards and protects the grounds and buildings of a museum
by standing watch at a station or by patrolling the grounds. The principal responsibility of the position
is to guard against pilfering and destruction and to keep general public order. The employee is also responsible for setting
up exhibits and for performing activities related to the care and maintenance
of exhibits. The work is performed
under the direct supervision of a Senior Museum Guard who makes periodic checks
for performance of duties. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Guards entrance date to prevent
unauthorized vehicles and persons from entering the premises, or guards a
specific area in order to protect against pilfering and destruction and to keep
general public order;
Directs visitors to
exhibits, buildings, or other areas of interest;
Patrols buildings and
grounds to prevent trespassing and damage to property;
Makes security checks
of doors, windows, and lights in buildings;
Directs parking of
vehicles by visitors in a parking field;
Setting up exhibits, hanging
paintings, packing, unpacking and storing of exhibits;
Prepares required
reports;
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Some knowledge of the basic rules of good conduct expected on public
grounds and buildings; ability to carry out written and oral instructions;
ability to observe suspicious activities and report evidence of loss or damage
to property; ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
