DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for keeping order in a justice court, and for providing assistance to the judge and court clerk as needed.  The work is part-time, and performed under the supervision of a court administrator.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assures proper behavior and attire in courtroom; 

          Arranges court papers for the judge on the bench; 

          Answers questions and provides information for public as necessary; 

          Seats jury, participants, attorneys and visitors; 

          May swear in defendants and witnesses;

          May collect fines and issue receipts. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of courtroom procedures; knowledge of the standards of conduct expected in a courtroom; some knowledge of business arithmetic; ability to manage the public fairly and firmly; ability to follow written and oral directions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Ability to read and write English.
