DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for supervising a staff of Security Guards.  The incumbent conducts daily inspections to ensure promptness, compliance with uniform requirements and the performance of assigned duties.  The incumbent may intervene in disturbances, restrain unruly individuals and/or make civilian arrests.  Work involves the exercise of considerable independent judgment and initiative in assisting and directing the Security Guards, and in the resolution of security problems. Performance is reviewed by a technical or administrative supervisor through reports and conferences.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assigns Security Guards;

            Checks daily logs kept by Security Guards;

            Checks and assists in preparation of incident reports by Security Guards;

            Assists the administrator in developing safety plans for running routine fire drills;

            Makes daily reports to a technical or administrative supervisor;

            May restrain unruly individuals and/or make civilian arrests if necessary; calls law enforcement officers for assistance;

            May assist in evacuation of buildings in cases of fire or bomb scares;

            May make periodic checks of doors, windows and parking areas to prevent trespassing and vandalism;

            May be responsible for general supervision of the entire Security Guard staff in the absence of the Security Supervisor.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of current effective security measures; good knowledge of standards of conduct expected in a public building and of relevant laws and ordinances; ability to react quickly and effectively in emergency situations; ability to enforce rules and regulations with firmness and tact; ability to supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain good working relationships with co-workers and the general public; ability to prepare clear concise reports; ability to express oneself clearly, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and two (2) years of experience as a guard.

 

NOTE: Additional education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State in criminal justice or relevant field will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Security Guard.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

            1) Depending upon assignment, possession of a valid New York State driver's license at time of appointment; if required, license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.

            2) Upon open-competitive appointment, candidates must apply for registration as a guard with the New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services.  Registration must be maintained throughout employment in this title.

            3) There will be a qualifying medical examination and psychological evaluation for open competitive appointments.
