DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for
coordinating and overseeing Security Guard staff employed by a County
department. The incumbent makes recommendations
to officials on improving the levels of safety and security within the bounds
of the jurisdiction. The incumbent
exercises a high level of initiative and judgment in performing the work and
may undertake civilian arrests when necessary.
Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative
supervisor, and is evaluated through conferences and review of written
reports. Does related work as required.
Provides supervision of security
personnel;
Inspects sites under the
responsibility of the security division to eliminate potential security and
safety hazards;
Works in cooperation with the
Suffolk County Police in carrying out duties;
Coordinates training, operations and
procedures of the security division;
Prepares budget recommendations for
the security division;
Maintain security records and
prepares reports;
Maintains personnel records and time
sheets for security division staff members;
May, when necessary, undertake
civilian arrests.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of current effective security measures; thorough knowledge of laws and ordinances governing behavior in public buildings; good knowledge of fire prevention and fire control; good knowledge of crowd control and evacuation procedures; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with department officials and the general public; ability to train and supervise personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience protecting lives and/or property; at least two (2) years of this experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.
NOTE: Additional
education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State will be substituted for non-supervisory experience on
a year-for-year basis.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent
competitive status as a Senior Security Guard or Safety Officer.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
1. Depending on assignment,
possession of a valid New York State driver's license at the time of
appointment; if required, license must be maintained throughout employment in
this title.
2. Upon appointment, candidates must
apply for registration as a guard with the New York State Department of State,
Division of Licensing Services.
