DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves assisting in the planning and direction of the security activities of a jurisdiction or a municipal department. The employee in this class is responsible for assisting in the coordination of activities of security personnel, and acts as Security Director in the director's absence. Supervision is exercised over a staff of security personnel. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Security Director and is reviewed through conferences and consultations. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists in the coordination, hiring, and training of security personnel;

          Coordinates the activities of the division's employees including assigning patrols, maintaining time records, and special details;

          Acts in place of the Security Director in the director's absence;

          Oversees the maintenance of the division's equipment.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of current, effective security measures; good knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques; ability to train and supervise security personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          (a) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four year college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and two years of experience in security work at a managerial or supervisory level; or,

         

          (b) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six years of experience in security work at a managerial or supervisory level; or,

         

          (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

 

NOTE:  Experience as a police officer (as defined in Sec. 1.20 of the New York State Criminal Procedure Law) will be substituted for the above-cited experience on a year-for-year basis.
