DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for planning and directing the security activities of a jurisdiction or a municipal department. The employee in this class establishes procedures to be followed in the carrying out of security systems in a department or jurisdiction. The incumbent is responsible for insuring that the security systems for owned and rented buildings and property are functioning at an optimum level. Supervision is exercised over a staff of subordinate security employees. The work is performed under the general supervi­sion of an administrative supervisor and is reviewed through conferences and the submission of required reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Oversees the hiring and training of security personnel;

          Coordinates the operations, procedures, and policies of the security division:

          Makes recommendations for security procedures to be followed by the public and employees in the use of facilities;

          Recommends the purchase of necessary supplies and equipment;

          Supervises, coordinates and reviews the work of security personnel, rela­tive to the activities of the security division;

          May be responsible for maintaining office records and preparing budgets for the security division;

          May supervise Emergency Medical Technicians and Radio Operators assigned to the security division.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of current, effective security measures; good knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques; good knowledge of basic first aid methods; ability to develop effective security procedures; ability to hire, train and supervise personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public; ability to express oneself clearly and con­cisely, both orally and in writing; tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          (a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree and four (4) years of experience in security work, two (2) years of which must have been at an administrative or supervisory level; or,

          (b) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and eight (8) years of experience in security work, four (4) years of which must have been at an administrative or supervisory level; or,

          (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

 

NOTE:  Experience as a police officer (as defined in Sec. 1.20 of the New York State Criminal Procedure Law) will be substituted for the above cited experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two years of permanent competitive status as an Assistant Security Director.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
