SIGN
PAINTER I 7111
An employee in this class is involved in performing
skilled work in the lettering of signs for a wide variety of purposes using
complex sign making equipment.
Incumbents do a variety of sign making and lettering including identification
and directional lettering for buildings and offices, vehicular identification
and traffic control sign making and fabrication. Lettering and sign fabrication
assignments are ordinarily received in terms of specific signs or other
illustrations to be made, and incumbents are expected to complete assignments
in accordance with standardized practices of the trade under relatively limited
supervision during the actual production.
Employees in this class will be training in the use of computer assisted
sign making, and may be called upon to produce simple computer designed
signage. Incumbents must be able to use
the manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices which contains all specifications
for roadway signs. Completed work is
closely checked however, through inspection for general quality and adherence
to established criteria. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Letters
a variety of signs for traffic control such as caution signs, stop signs and
others;
Designs all types
and sizes of signs identifying facilities and installations throughout the
County;
Makes a variety of
identifying signs for buildings; letters office doors;
Letters and stripes
automotive equipment; uses computer generated lettering;
Designs
signs consistent with the manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices;
Designs and
fabricates all types of indoor and roadway signs with the assistance of a Heavy
Equipment Operator;
Keeps a daily
inventory of all signs issued and/or installed;
Assists a
Maintenance Mechanic IV (Carpenter/Sign Maker) in more specialized sign making
using more complex tools;
Installs indoor and
outdoor building signs with the assistance of a Maintenance Mechanic IV
(Carpenter/Sign Maker) and/or a Heavy Equipment Operator;
Installs roadway
signs with the assistance of a Heavy Equipment Operator.
Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and
materials used in the making and fabrication of signs; thorough knowledge of
the basic techniques of all standard methods of sign painting, such as silk
screen, air brush, spray gun and others; thorough knowledge of the standards
required under the manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices; skill in
lettering and fabricating signs with all types of equipment; ability to design
signs and apply computer generated lettering onto aluminum or wood sign blanks;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
a) Graduation from
a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with
an Associate's Degree in Art, Design or a related field, and one (1) year of
experience in the making or painting of signs; or,
b) Two (2) years of
vocational or technical training in the field of art or design, and one (1)
year of experience in the making or painting of signs; or,
c) Three (3) years
of experience in the making or painting of signs and fabrication work; or,
d)
Two (2) years of permanent status as a Heavy Equipment Operator, with at least
one (1) year of experience in building and roadway sign construction and
installation; or,
e)
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience as defined by
the limits of a, b, c and d.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment
and during employment in this title employees must possess a valid license to operate
a motor vehicle in New York State.
