DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the functioning
of a complex system of door locks for a jurisdiction. The incumbent is responsible for devising keying systems for each
of the buildings in the jurisdiction.
Other duties include the preparation and installation of locks in new
doors, the opening of jammed locks, the repair of broken or damaged locks and
the service and repair of all types of door hardware. Supervision is received through written reports and observation
of work, in progress and upon completion.
Supervision may be exercised over subordinate maintenance
personnel. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans
and installs grand master, building master, section master, sub-section master and
individual keying systems for each building in the jurisdiction;
Prepares and installs
cylinder locks in new doors;
Estimates budgetary
requirements and submits bids and purchase requisitions;
Repairs broken or damaged
locks on file cabinets, desks, cabinets or other equipment;
Services, repairs and
installs various types of auxiliary door and cabinet hardware;
Cuts keys according to
code or by duplication of existing keys;
Sets up and maintains key machines and a system of key blanks for use in
the various buildings.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the methods and procedures of planning an installing master keying
systems; thorough knowledge of the various types of locks, how they are
serviced, opened, repaired and keyed; good knowledge of different key cutters
and degree of cut for all types of locks; good knowledge of the installation
and replacement of cylinder locks; ability to use and care for hand tools with
proficiency; ability to keep records and make reports; ability to estimate in
advance the need for supplies and equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Four
(4) years of experience in Locksmithing duties.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
May be
required to possess a certificate of completion of a course in Locksmithing.
