DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising and participating in the installation, repair and maintenance, and cross-connection control of water service lines, hydrants, and fittings to residential, commercial and industrial users within a Water District.  Duties require the utilization of several construction and mechanical trades and proper use of appropriate equipment, tools and methods.  The incumbent assigns tasks to subordinate personnel verbally or by work order giving specific instructions and/or creating a rough sketch of the work to be done.  Inspects work of subordinates upon completion of task or while work is in progress.  The incumbent receives assignments and supervision from an administrative or technical supervisor.  Does related work as required.  

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises, schedules, and assigns the work of maintenance personnel;

            Performs skilled trades work in the repair, replacement and maintenance of water service lines and equipment;

            Supervises and participates in the maintenance of the distribution system including: repair and flushing of mains; repair, replacement, installation of hydrants, valves, valve boxes, service lines, curb          stops and meter pits; painting exposed equipment;

            Supervises and participates in the installation of services such as tap         mains, service lines, meter pits; operates back hoe; installs and inspects cross-connection control fittings;

            Inspects work sites and equipment;

            Supervises and instructs subordinate personnel;

            Keeps records and makes reports of work activities, material used and condition of equipment and tools;

            May be required to make sketches of work site, take measurements and mark location of facilities;

            Supervises maintenance of all buildings and grounds, including minor repairs, painting, refuse removal and lawn mowing;

            May be required to repair and maintain motor vehicles and trucks used in the Water District.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in installing, maintaining and repairing water service mains and equipment; thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics of materials, tools and equipment commonly used in water service projects; thorough knowledge of the work hazards and necessary safety precautions; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates and equipment in an efficient and effective manner; ability to keep simple records and make reports; ability to direct work to be performed using maintenance manuals, sketches and oral descriptions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of potable water service lines.
