DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for obtaining accurate water meter readings on an established route.  Work includes minor meter repairs and investigation of causes of abnormal consumption.  Work is reviewed by administrative supervisor through oral and written reports.  Does related work as requested.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Periodically reads meter dials and records reading in route book;

          Inspects meters for defects or damage;

          May install and repair water meters;

          Notifies consumers of shut-offs due to emergency repairs;

          Assists in the handling of complaints;

          Answers questions on rates and other matters related to water service.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of the operational characteristics of water meters; ability to work in both favorable and unfavorable weather conditions; ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner; ability to follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to keep simple records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of ten school grades.

 

NOTE:  Experience in the reading and repair of water meters will be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
