DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for maintaining, repairing and installing various structures and equipment on County or town operated harbors, channels, rivers, bays and canals.  The work involves the construction of docks and bulkheads which ordinarily would not require the services of a trade worker.  The incumbent's work requires a working knowledge of several building and mechan­ical trades, but does not require a high degree of skill or experience in any one trade.  Area assignments are received verbally at the beginning of each workday and are specific regarding the work to be done. The incumbent works with some independence in carrying out assigned tasks, but all work is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion by appro­priate supervisory personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Maintains, repairs and builds docks, bulkheads, ramps, jetties, canal locks and other waterways structures; strengthens or replaces work or rotted pilings and plankings;

          May operate an hydraulic dredge;

          Operates pumps, compressors, drills, saws, winches, hoists and related tools and equipment needed to carry out an assigned job;

          Paints waterways buildings, docks, machinery and equipment using brushes and spray guns, under the direction of an assigned supervisor;

          Installs and maintains navigation lights, buoys and markers in harbors and channels;

          Erects scaffolding; loads and unloads materials and supplies and performs a variety of semi-skilled or unskilled duties when assigned.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the materials, equipment and work methods used in main­taining, repairing and building waterway structures; good knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance of all vehicles, tools and equipment commonly used in waterways projects; good knowledge of the work hazards and necessary safety precautions; skill in the use of electrically and manually operated saws, drills, pumps, compressors and other tools and equipment used in the work; ability to operate a motorboat; ability to operate a hydraulic dredge; ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written in­structions; ability to make rough estimates of time and material requirements; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Four (4) years of experience in semi-skilled maintenance or construction work.
